New dog greets clients at the Underground drop-in center

“I miss playing with my dog.”

Over the past four years, I’ve heard many young visitors express this sentiment when they are greeted by our emotional support dog at the Underground.

During this time, we have welcomed youth to the Underground 3,400 times. Virtually all of these youth have experienced some sort of victimization. Many have already been trafficked or exploited; the rest are at high risk for exploitation. The Underground, open 24/7, is a drop-in center that provides a safe and discreet way for youth to get off the streets and into long-term care.

Our emotional support dog, Wilber, eases youth into the Underground, helping them feel safe to share their experiences with staff and receive services. Dogs don’t require explanations. They simply enjoy us for who we are. Their presence is a healing balm, infusing comfort and stability in the midst of crisis.

Wilber’s presence, offering warmth and a soft paw, helps our young visitors feel grounded during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Through the years, Wilber has sat with youth in interviews with law enforcement, who then prepare to take a case against a trafficker to trial. He has been a calming presence during counseling sessions.

His presence reminds youth that they are not alone… something we all need to be reminded of from time to time.

After four years of full time, frontlines work, Wilber will soon be retiring. His paws have left big prints on our hearts, and we will miss him!

That being said, we are grateful to share that a new specially trained lab will be joining our team! OUR Rescue has generously gifted Unbound Now with this dog to continue reaching youth as they exit trafficking situations and begin the healing journey. Thank you, OUR Rescue!
